A brief History
Camp Butler, Inc. began in June of 1974 as a ministry of the Jasper, Progressive and Vernon associations of Free Will Baptists. The following nine men were chosen by their associations to serve on the first board of the camp. William Atkinson, William Baird. James Pittman, E. A. Riggs, Raphael Yerby, L. C. Steedley, Billy Sharpston, Woodrow Matthews, and James Walden.
The name was changed to Northwest Alabama Free Will Baptist Youth Camp January 8, 1975. The camp is located on an approximate 20 acre plot two miles west of the Yampertown Community on Marion County Highway 3. The first buildings were dedicated March 11, 1976.
The camp at that time consisted of three buildings, a boys’ dormitory and a girls’ dorm, both sized at 40 X 100 feet. Each building will hold 50 “double” bunks sleeping a total of 100 persons per dorm. The third building is the kitchen-dining hall, which is 50 X 100 feet. This building, after dedication, was formally named the Howard Franks Hall, in honor of one of the men who worked to make the camp a reality. Howard Franks was a deacon at the Mt. Olive Free Will Baptist Church where Woodrow Matthews was pastor at that time.
In 1989, the name was changed to Trinity Camp. Even though the name was new, the commitment remained the same and today Trinity Camp continues to minister to the needs of men, women, boys and girls. In August of 1995, Bro. Rick Cash became the first full-time Camp Administrator. In September of 2000 Bro. Ashley Culp assumed the position of Camp Administrator.
The current board of directors consist of Mark Riggs, Tommy Franks, Bryan Silas, Tommy Bee, Roy Helms, Michael Phenecie, Marcus Stephens, David I. Crowe and Chris Wilhite.
